Castle Terminology: Ashlar

  

Ashlar refers to blocks of smooth, squared stone often used as facing stone for castle walls. In the example below from Rhuddlan Castle, we see both the smooth finished stone towards the top of the tower and the rubble in-fill towards the bottom.
