Above: The inner gatehouse and eastern side of the castle. The mounting structure of the gatehouse's turning bridge can be seen between the towers. The impressive twin-towered gatehouse guards the entrance to the inner ward. A modern bridge replaces the original bridge that spanned the water filled moat.
Below: The foundations of a strong square keep are at the south of the inner bailey with the original entrance gateway just beyond.
Below left: The original entrance to the inner bailey at the southern end of the enclosure. Beyond it lies a ditch and the outer bailey of the earlier earthwork castle. Below right: The strong half-round mural towers of the inner bailey were built down the steep slope of the earthwork. This is the western tower.
A view from the low remains of an internal building towards the inner gatehouse. The castle's well is in the foreground.
Below: the remains of a large oven adjacent to the western tower. It is thought that this was the location of the castle’s medieval kitchen and brew house kilns.
Below left: The south-western tower was added to the original stone enclosure wall, which itself was built in place of a wooden rampart. Below right: Looking across the inner bailey from West to east.
Below: Looking across the inner bailey at the east and south walls. The old southern gateway is between the south-east tower and demolished square keep.
A glimpse from the south-western tower down to the wet moat. It’s long way from the tower to the moat.
