In the 15th century a gallery ran along the rear of the gatehouse range, housing a library. Later, the gallery was subdivided and an attic was inserted above to provide extra accommodation. Raglan's extensive library, one of the best collections of books and medieval manuscripts in Wales, was largely destroyed by Cromwell's men after the surrender of the castle during the Civil War.
